Watering

Water deeply two to three times a week through the first summer, then taper to a weekly deep soak once established. Deep and infrequent beats shallow and daily: it drives roots down instead of toward the surface. In heat waves, add a mid-week soak; yellowing interior leaves usually mean too much water, not too little.

Pruning

Shear three to four times a year to hold a flat, formal face — light and often is the secret. Keep the hedge slightly wider at the base than the top so sunlight reaches the lower foliage and the wall stays green to the ground. Major height reductions are best done in early spring.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced slow-release fertilizer (a 15-15-15 works well) in early spring and again in midsummer. Water in thoroughly. Skip feeding from late fall through winter — you want the hedge slowing down, not pushing tender growth into the cool season.

Pests & problems

Cuban laurel thrips and whitefly are the usual visitors: look for curled, pocketed leaves. Shear off affected tips, dispose of clippings, and hose the canopy interior; horticultural oil handles stubborn cases. The bigger watch item is roots — respect setbacks and keep barriers intact near hardscape.
