Watering

Keep the root zone consistently moist, especially through the first three summers — magnolia roots run shallow and wide, so a broad watering basin beats a single emitter at the trunk. A generous mulch ring is the cheapest insurance you can buy; keep it clear of the trunk itself.

Pruning

Minimal. Shape lightly just after a bloom flush, removing only crossing or wayward branches; magnolias heal slowly from large cuts, so think twice before making one. Espaliered specimens are tipped little and often to hold the pattern.

Feeding

Feed in early spring with a slow-release formulated for acid-loving evergreens. Yellowing leaves with green veins signal chlorosis in alkaline soil — corrected with chelated iron and organic matter. Older interior leaves dropping in spring is normal shedding, not distress.

Pests & problems

Scale is the main visitor: look for sticky honeydew and sooty film, and treat with horticultural oil in the cool season. Otherwise Little Gem is remarkably trouble-free — most problems trace back to drought stress on those shallow roots.
